Consistent strain/stress lag eddy-viscosity model for hybrid RANS/LES

چکیده

The paper presents a comparison of several hybridization between RANS and LES, and their potential and limitations in an industrial context. The first part of the paper addresses an often eluded problem in the hybrid RANS/LES community: the importance of the baseline statistical model. A new robust low-Reynolds number eddy-viscosity model, derived from a Reynolds-stress model and accounting for the lag between stress and strain is extended to Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), and compared with the most widely used DES models. The potential of two recently proposed hybridization of RANS and LES models is then discussed. The first one is based on a dual-mesh approach, where statistical and scale-resolving simulations are performed on separate grids, with drifts terms allowing to recover the most accurate solution on each grid. The current dual-mesh formulation is then compared with a consistent hybrid filtering combining RANS and LES.

Hybrid RANS/LES computation of plane impinging jet flow

Flow characteristics are presented of simulation results of plane impinging jets at high nozzle-plate distances, with two k-ω based hybrid RANS/LES (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes/Large–Eddy Simulation) models and a k-ω RANS model. The first hybrid RANS/LES model is obtained by substitution of the turbulent length scale by the local grid size in the destruction term of the turbulent kinetic en...

Wall-modeled large eddy simulation in complex geometries with application to high-lift devices

In large eddy simulations (LES) of wall-bounded flows, the need to resolve energycarrying eddies in the vicinity of the wall leads to a prohibitive cost which prevents its use at very high Reynolds numbers. To overcome this limitation, many attempts have been made in the last two decades to model the unresolved scales near the wall. These works mainly focused on two different approaches: hybrid...

Hybrid RANS/LES of plane jets impinging on a flat plate at small nozzle-plate distances

A k-ω based hybrid RANS/LES (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/large eddy simulation) model is tested for simulation of plane impinging jets at various nozzle-plate distances (H/B), where H is the distance and B is the slot’s width) and various Reynolds numbers (based on the slot’s width and the velocity in the symmetry plane). The studied combinations are H/B = 2 for Re = 10 000, H/B = 4 for Re ...

Model-Invariant Hybrid LES-RANS Computation of Separated Flow Past Periodic Hills

The requirement that physical quantities not vary with a hybrid LESRANS model’s blending parameter imposes conditions on the computation that lead to better results across LES-RANS transitions. This promises to allow placement of those transitions so that LES is performed only where required by the physics, improving computational efficiency. The approach is applied to separated flow past perio...

A Dual-mesh Hybrid Les/rans Framework with Implicit Consistency

INTRODUCTION The high computational cost of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for wall-bounded flows at high Reynolds numbers still is a major hurdle for applications to practical flows in industry and nature [3]. To overcome this difficulty, various hybrid LES/RANS methods have been proposed, of which the most widely used one is Detached Eddy Simulation (DES). Recently, Xiao and Jenny [4] developed ...
